Not so lovable losers

Here’s the wildcard race, and how I think it’s going to go:

St. Louis will probably win the NL Central. They have 6 games to go, 3 of which are against the Cubs. If this past weekend is any indication, the Cub games are wins for the Cards, which will put them at least at 92-70.

Milwaukee could win the division, but probably won’t, because they’ll have to win all 6 of their remaining games to have a chance. I think they’ll win 4 or 5, which puts them at 90-72 or 91-71, which will give them a wildcard berth.

Washington has 8 games to go, 5 against Philadelphia and 3 against Cleveland. They’ll probably win at least half of those games, which gives them the other wildcard.

The Cubs and Arizona, the other two teams that have any chance, will have to win all 6 of their remaining games to go anywhere. In the case of the Cubs, there’s no way the Cards are going to lose 3 in St. Louis.

Bye bye, Cubbies. See you in 2124.

What’s with the Sox?

Anyone who knows me knows that the intent of this blog was to slam the Cubs when they’re down. I never bought into the whole lovable losers thing; why the heck would anyone waste money seeing losing ball? And that stadium… it’s a dump. They shouldn’t have bothered dressing it up — they really should have torn it down and started over.

All that is beside the point. The order of the universe is disturbed when the Cubs do reasonably decently (read: above .500) and the White Sox… well, the White Sox suck. Sorry, but it’s true. April can be rough on a lot of teams, but .364 (as of 3 May)?!? My 2015 Sox are starting to look like (dare I say it) the 2014 Bears.

Poor kid

I happened to be watching the Cubs game yesterday. They happened to be celebrating the 100th anniversary of Wrigley Field (more on that later), so we left it on in the event that they did anything interesting.

So it gets to the top of the 9th, and the Cubs are ahead 5 to 2, and I’m thinking, they’re celebrating today, maybe they’ll blow it. Sure enough, before I know it, the Cubs’ lead is gone and the game is tied. The Dbacks went on to win the game (amid much cheering at my house), and this poor kid has a meltdown. http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/eye-on-baseball/24537380/gif-cubs-lose-kid-cries-some-things-never-change He’d better get used to it, if he’s going to remain a Cub fan. After all, the Cubs are on track to lose 105 games this year. That’s a lot of meltdowns.

I do admit to feeling sorry for Jeff Samardzija – he’s a better pitcher than this, and shouldn’t be stuck with an 0 – 2 record.

One question, Theo: Are you f***ing kidding me?!?

I can’t believe this headline on the Chicago Tribune’s web site:
Epstein: ‘It’s postseason or bust every year’
Theo, Theo, Theo. Whom are you trying to kid? 104 years since the last World Series win. 101 losses in 2012.
“We’re building for something greater,” Epstein says. Greater than what, Theo? Greater than a 101-game-losing team? Are you serious? It shouldn’t be hard to win more than 61 games; on the other hand, this is the Chicago Cubs we’re talking about.
Maybe those poor souls who have tickets for the Cub convention are buying this crap, but I can’t imagine that anyone else is.
Gimme a break, Theo. I’ll believe it when I see it. Maybe.
